‘Your life fingerprint is unique, you are the only person on the planet who has it. Its discovery holds the key to being who you really are, and that holds the key to greater happiness.’ Gill McLaren, Author THINK.PLAN.LIVE.
What is a Unique Life Fingerprint? In the same way your fingerprint is unique, so too is your Life Fingerprint ™ .
Although we are born with aspects of our life defined, such as our base IQ or our level of extraversion or introversion, much of our Fingerprint is developed over our life journey. In this regard we are responsible for our own evolution, our own development – we can manage and curate vital elements such as our sources of energy and our sources of inspiration.
With a little bit of thinking, reflection and planning you can unlock how you really feel about your life, and once you have done that you will never look back
To discover your Unique Life Fingerprint and design your best life, you need to ask yourself questions about your 6Ws – the Who, What, With, Why, Where and When.
Who captures the core of who you are – your strengths, your values and what drives your highs and lows, bringing out the best and worst in you. When you read your summary of your Who it will feel right and like a true summary. The exercises of tracking your Life Line and discovering your values and strengths are the component parts of defining your Who.
What focuses on what you enjoy doing – the type of work and career you enjoy andthrive in, and the hobbies, experiences and interests you enjoy. When you have clarified this, you can consider how what you currently do compares.
With puts the lens on who you enjoy doing things with – your family and friends, and the colleagues or bosses that bring out the best in you. It focuses on who and what give you energy and inspiration and who and what take these away.
Why – here the question is why you what you do. Based on your Who, What, With and your unique blend of strengths, values, belief and passions, your why helps to define your ‘gifts’ – the things that are uniquely you, that when you show up using this blend of what you do with who you are, you are at your absolute best, feeling energised and passionate. I have come to realise that people struggle to define their own ‘gifts’; they are hidden from them because they are by their nature intuitive and come naturally. We often dismiss them as being normal and think everyone does things that way. They are in fact the opposite – unique and our greatest asset.
Where is all about places and environments that bring out the best in you. Countryside or city? Travelling or at home? On the beach or in a forest? What’s your ideal home, your ideal work environment?
When focuses on your timing – when you want to do and achieve things against key milestones you determine. What would success look like in the next 12 months? When do I want to shift roles or careers? When do I want to start my own business? When do I want to move overseas or live back in my home country? When do I want to retire? Creating integrated plans against key personal milestones becomes intuitive, but only once the other 5Ws are clear.
In my work in Life Design I have come to a clear realisation that the Life you lead, and your life fingerprint need to be in strong alignment and overlap to be living your best life.
If aspects of the life you are living are different from your true Life fingerprint, you will feel it in stress and tension. These stresses can appear in any of the 6W’s. Many people focus on the “what’, thinking it is what they are doing in their career that is their main issue, but I have discovered that it is typically the Who and With that are the greatest sources of Life Fingerprint tension in both your career and personal life.
The closer you can get to living the life that works for you with your unique gifts and abilities, being energised by your energy sources rather than being drained by energy vampires, the happier and more productive you will be. Decisions become easier when you use your Unique Life Fingerprint as your compass to design your best life.
Think.Plan.Live. offers a set of practical steps that help you to design your best life, based on your values and strengths, and the answers to the 6Ws. I wrote Think.Plan.Live. because I truly believe that if we each design our best lives, we can make a unique contribution. It is a practical guide to life design. Life Design should be done your way: whether that is with the book, through the online portal, with workshops or executive coaching, or a combination of these.
“Just open the book and do your Who. I mean, really, just do it… Do the book. It’s life-changing. I waited a while before I finished it because I really didn’t want it to end.”
• Kim Bullock, at the launch of Think.Plan.Live
